That must have been some backfire! Bet the neighbours ran for cover!!
I suppose on a positive note you know it's getting fuel and a spark.

How old is the car, is it fuel injected or carb?

Did you get the air filter wet, if so replace it.

Can you disable the fuel pump (usually by removing the appropriate relay) and the spark plugs (usually by removing the 'low tension' wire to the coilpack, but depends on car)?
If you can, do so, then crank the car over for five seconds or so, let it sit for at least thirty seconds (to avoid damaging the battery and starter motor) then repeat five or six times. Keep the accelerator pedal pressed to the floor while cranking. This should clear excess fuel from the system.
Now plug everything back in and try again.

Given the amount of electronic connectors, sensors and actuators on the engine, what made you think jetwashing it would be a good idea!!?

You'll have to get yourself a tin of WD40 and a tin of electrical contact cleaner spray (both available from Halfords).
Check all the fuses, if any are blown find out what circuits they control and dry all the relevant components and connections as follows.
Disconnect the battery.
Disconnect each plug and connector, spray the WD40 into plug and socket, shake it out or blow out using compressed air, then spray with the contact cleaner and re-connect. I dont know where the ECU is on this car, if it's in the engine bay make sure it is done. Make sure you do the spark plug wires.

Note- disconnect and refit ONE CONNECTION AT A TIME, that way none get left loose or mixed up.
At least it is nice warm weather, which helps to dry things up. If you can get the car inside and get a heater blowing on the engine that would help.
