The engine will not crank even with the battery disconnected, when the battery is connected the solenoid clicks rapidly, what's the deal?

What Chib meant to say was that the mower will not take a jump when the battery is out of the loop. What is the function of the solenoid? Could this be bad? Would it keep the battery from recharging?

Why would it crank with the battery disconnecterd ?
Sounds like a bad battery ........or possably a bad solenoid
