astra wont start?

its a 1.4 n reg so around 1996. the manual says the logo is an engine electrical fault. will try bump starting it later and let you know the outcome. thanks for your help. if i keep cranking it will i ruin the battery?

In that case, I dont know! My first check in cases of sudden death is usually the cam belt, but that would not explain the random crank/noncrank.
Dont think I can be much help on this one. There are a couple of things you can check yourself but I'd need to see/hear it for myself and get some diagnostics done before commiting myself.

Check the wiring to the starter.
Could be a dodgy earth, try getting a single jump lead and clip one end to the battery negative terminal and the other end to a good metal earth point on the engine (the lifting out bracket is usually good for this).

Have you tried bump starting it?

You say the electrical warning light was on, are you referring to the battery shaped one or the engine management light. Not trying to be a patronising dick by the way, it has to be asked. An over or under charging alternator can cause all sorts of problems.


What year and engine (pref including engine code) is the car?

the battery was faulty for a while,so i thought it was best to change. it now turns over but wont fire up,sometimes it doesn't turn over at all and then when i go back to it later it decides to try again.management light not flashing whilst cranking the engine-really confused and dont want to ruin new battery!

The engine stopped while driving,electrical fault light came on.Tried starting with leads and it charged but wouldnt start.Thought that was the problem so went and got a new battery,but still wont start?

Has this only happened since you fitted the battery, or did you fit the battery to try to solve the problem?
Is the engine management light flashing while you are cranking the engine?
