Mend Chevrolet C5 Overheating Temperature Radiator

C5 cooling problem?

I have an 51 2 ltr exclusive that keeps throwing up temp warning and stop light on dash,has had new thermostat.
Top hose and rad hot,bottom hose stone cold,suspect water pump,are these of plastic construction and do they fail,car has done 52000. All ideas greatfully recieved before I spend lots of money Cheers
