if the battery is draining while its running then this will make the igntion system fail on this bike so that will be your spluttering problem i would say look at the battery and you will see two red wires on the live terminal one thick one and one thinner one the thinner one will go to the regulator mate they often get green corrosion on the main red charging wire where it goes into the reg/rec and i think the regulator is under one of the seat sidepanels.they are not a bad bike really they often have cam chain rattles and the drain holes in the fuel cap well blocks up on them whcih leads to water in the fuel tank !

if you didnt flush out the petrol tank and strip & clean the carbs & jets then its likely theres rust and all sorts of muck bunging things up! run the motor to test charging circuit with a multimeter set on 0-20 volts DC across the battery terminals, should get 14.4V reading at least. do not know where the reg/rec is but your year model has one red & one black lead if its original.
