Peugeot J5 engine in a Talbot Express - Starting problem?

I have a problem with my engine starting on the campa in the title. It will turn over and smoke comes from the exhaust but doesn't run.

I have done the following

Checked for the relay clicking when the coil light turns off and it does
Primed the fuel using the manual pump on the fuel filter. It goes firm when pumped
Loosened the fuel pipes by the injectors and turned the engine over to see if the fuel gets there. It does but not sure how much I should see.

Not sure what else to look at. The engine has only done 40K and I had it services last year. Any ideas please?
