what's wrong?

We had a power failure yesterday, my alarm was not activated at the time. The blue light on the box outside is flashing intermittently. I am unable to reset on the keypad, in fact none of the buttons on the key pad will work. I assume the battery in the key pad box needs replaced. However if I attempt to unscrew the box will the tamper cause the alarm to sound constantly?!
