how do i know if my heater or thermostat has gone on my dryer as it has no heat?

It's probably one of your temperature trips that has failed.
Unplug drier, remove back panel, look for 2 smallish round things in the wiring before the element. They may have blobs of paint on them. Remove and check for continuity. If these are ok, the next thing to check is the element, again can be done by a continuity check.
