Mend MTD 604 Mower Transmission Clutch

Clutch adjustment on MTD 604 mower?

The take off is all or nothing and is putting my back out to the point that if I cant make it more gentle, then I will have to change my three year old mower. It has transmatic ( belt transmission) semi automatic transmission.
It was serviced last year and the dealer could not help. Service manual is pretty useless - can anyone help please ?
