hotpoint wf240 just keeps on washing won't continue its cycle?

Can anyone help - my washing machine keeps washing the clothes and will not go on to the rinse and spin cycle. It means that the loads get washed for hours unless I'm there to press the pause button and turn the dial to spin and rinse - any ideas how to fix it please?Thanks
