engine red light on and speedometor not working ?

hi the i have a fiat ducato 2.8 jtd engine the speedometor stopped working and at the same time the engine red light came on . the aa told me it could be a bad earth so it was ok to drive back to scotland the engine is woeking fine from jc1 on the m6 to glasow no probes
