Mend Grundfos 15-50 Noisy Pump Loud

Grundfos Selectric 15-50 - noisy when on, intermittent banging?

For the last few weeks our pump has been getting noisy, now we get loud vibration/banging noises that are sometimes short like a car turning over, sometimes as long as a minute. The water is still heating up but takes a long time.
The pump gets too hot to touch after being on for around 20 minutes.
Any ideas?

try turning it down to number 2 or even number 1, purge(bleed) system with the power OFF to boiler

we replaced the pump.

It is purring now.

Thanks Ian. I suppose I was also wondering if it's definitely the pump making the noises, would the valve make it do this if is was that that was faulty?
