how do i set the timing on my briggs & stratton 12hp sidevalve engine?

my briggs and stratton 12hp sidevalve engine has snapped the con rod, how do i set the timing again once i have replaced it.
there is a dot on the timing gear but it doesnt seem to line up with anything. can you help ? thanks

Look for a scribed line or one beveled tooth on the other gear.
If it is a ball bearing engine the crankshaft timing mark will be on the crank throw.
