panasonic dmr-ez47veb VHS playback ?

I have a panasonic dmr-ez47veb and have recently tried to playback commercial VHS tapes but the picture is grainy and black and white, DVD's playback in full colour and with good picture quality. How can I get the VHS to playback in colour??
