Hi, My car makes a whirring sound unless the clutch is down. My mechanic says he thinks it might be a bearing in the gearbox. Is it possible to fix this bearing, if so, how please? Or may it be something else?
could be clutch release bearing or indeed a bearing in the box. either way its gearbox out job to rectify and possible gearbox stripdown. most likely to be release bearing.

Your mechanic seems to know what's wrong, noise with the clutch pedal released (up) means the input shaft (in the gearbox) bearings worn.
