How do I bleed the air out of my Volkswagen Transporter TDi?

the engine on my van cut off as I was driving. I was able to start it again, after trying for a while, and after moving about ten meters it cut off again. Subsequently, I was able to restart it several times, but it kept cutting off. the tank was reading empty, so I guess there's air in the system, but I'm not sure where to bleed it from. I don't think there's a manual pump on it.
