Hi Tony, would start by cleaning EGR valve, check it is free,if no better remove top pipe from filter,a quick flick to ignition on and you should get a flow from the low pressure pump in the tank.As a precaution check the heater plugs are ok,flick a live feed onto each plug, you should get a small spark if they are ok.Have had problems with bad starting which was a fuel filter blocked so worth a look there too.Next thing would be to check your valve timing, have had loads of timing chains and tensioners gone on these, find hole at bottom of g/box near the exhaust flexi think it is a 7/32 or somewhere near that and push a drill up onto the flywheel, get someone to turn engine, never turn these a/clockwise or the tensioner pops out and you are in trouble, you will feel drill lock engine when it locates, remove heater plug connectors and the three 10mm bolts holding loom onto head, you will see round plug in middle of head think it is an 8mm hex to remove it,get a torch and have a look at the slot on the camshaft in the hole and make sure it is roughly in the middle of the hole,if lower edge of slot is level with threads on plug would say your valve timing is out.One more thing is that some combos that wind and wind first thing in morning and take ages to start turned out to be a starter, they sound ok when turning over but there is a heavier duty starter that fits an Astra that fits these combos that make all the difference, fitted this and the motor starts no bother, sorry dont know the part no,but can get you it if required, good luck
