Mend Snapper Blade Mower

Blade removal on a Snapper?

1976 model S211 walk behind Snapper lawn mower.
Is the bolt that holds the cutter blade on, a left hand or right hand thread? I am really having a difficult time getting the bolt loose.
I disconnected the spark plug and tipped it on it's side and cannot get the bolt loose. I sprayed lubricant on it and have even tapped with a hammer on a closed end 5/8 wrench and a 1/2 drive 5/8 socket wrench. I'm afraid of just rounding off the head. Any suggestions ?, or, I can give up and take it to a repair shop. Please help. Thanks

If your blade rotates anti-clockwise (when viewed from below) the bolt will be a normal right hand thread (ie the rotation of the blade will tend to tighten the bolt) The reverse will obviously be true if your blade rotates clockwise. Because these bolts are exposed to damp grass etc. they can be a swine to remove, especially if they have not been greased on installation. My usual solution is to heat the bolt with a blowlamp to break any rust seal and use a ring spanner with a piece of steel pipe over the spanner to increase the leverage. You will also need to prevent the blade from turning. Before heating make sure that nothing that is going to get hot is in contact with anything plastic (it will melt) or near any fuel or vapour. If you are not confident about doing this take it to your local workshop!
