Mend Recoil Spring Mower

how do i hold the spring on a recoil to tighten it?

i need to restring my pull start and I cant get the recoil spring to wind up how do i do that i was turning it counter clockwise and it will not tighten up

The spring winds so the pulley is turning the direction the rope would pull out. Should be counter clockwise. If it were turning the wrong way the spring may have com out of it's retaining notch, in that case the recoil will need to be dissasembled.
