How can I fix the pull cord mechanism for my Vantage 35 petrol lawn mower?
I pulled the cord off my starter flywheel trying to start it. The knot holding the pull cord in place wore thin and broke. So I took the mechanism apart and re-threaded the cord and replaced the flywheel. I can pull the cord to start the engine but the cord won't retract back into the flywheel mechanism - is this because the recoil spring is broken? If so how do I fix it? If not, what else do I need to do?
Thanks for getting back to me - I will take a look at it tonight and see if I can sort it out. I tried winding/re-cocking the flywheel when I re-threaded the cord but it didn't seem particularly strong/springy - I also tried winding the flywheel round (to find the compression point) and whilst I could pull start the motor again - the cord just didn't spring back/retract.

Did you remember to wind back the flywheel in the opposite direction to the pull (ie against the spring) before threading the new cord that way when you let go of the tightly wound flywheel the cord will nip bak in. If i have just asked you a really stupid question then does the fly wheel spring back when there is no cord fastened to it.
