How can I fix my epson 1290 printer. The red light stays on?

Tried about 5 genuine cartridges to get the printer to print a decent test pattern as well as swoppinf the print head out of my other old 1290. Got the machine to print perfectly. Put the original head back red light on all the time. Put the older head back that originally worked but the same red light as well as the head shooting across the carriage to the cartridge change position. The newer head had hardly done any work but has always caused trouble blocking up and not printing correctly.

Any ideas on the cost of getting this hardly used printer up to speed.
