How can I repair a hose on my Hoover Purepower 1500w?

I have a Hoover Purepower 1500w and the hose has a split in it about 3 inches away from the end of the hose at the tool end. I would like to know how I can repair it myself if it is possible.
I have taken off the first tool which was easy which now leaves a white plastic section which is attached to the end of the hose which I cannot seem to remove. I would like to cut off the damaged section of the hose and connect it all back together. This should be a fairly simple proceedure ( when you know how ). I would very much appreciate any advise that anyone can give me.
