how can I fix my rayburn 380L boiler?

I have a rayburn 380L LPG boiler which fires up,makes knocking noises then switches off before circulation takes place so no radiators or hot water come on.Sometimes it works ok for several days.Can I do the repair myself without flushing or does it mean new heat exchanger.If so how much should I expect to pay.
