It is a bit risky if the machine is very old and has the original motor and control because cables do deteriorate and it could become dangerous, not being able to see the wiring you have to make the judgment yourself, to replace the motor and control would be expensive and depending on the model would determine if it would be worth it or not, you should have a model number under the stitch length lever.
