Use a cold bitumen solution available from most decent DIY shops.
spread this over the roof with a broom. Give it 2 -3 coats and then use a silver solution ( ask at a decent hardware shop ) should last about 10 yrs. I agree a pitched roof will last longer since the water will roll off faster.
