How to repair the "snowy" section of my VHS tape? ?

We were trying to record from the mini VHS's (using the adapter) to a DVD when all of a sudden, that section of the VHS became "snowy". The picture wont show but the audio is still there. Is there any way possible to restore the picture? Please HELP!!

This is one of the most important tapes I have. If it can't be restored, please tell me what we did to "break" it so that we don't ever repeat this action again.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Felecia , this is an age old problem with V.H.S. tapes , connect the machine direct to a t.v or monitor if the picture is still snowy then the video heads are dirty and need cleaning , this is usualy caused by putting video`s that are cold into a warm machine or visa versa , to cure the problem take the cover off of the video machine , put in an old video tape and put it on play , you will notice the tape is moved up to the rotating drum called the video head , this drum has two or more tiny black heads built into the side of the drum , you will notice the tape going aroud the drum while the drum is spinning , place a cigarette paper between the tape and the drum and let it go round with the drum , do this at least two times , then try a good video , if it works replace the cover and try recording again . hope this helps DO NOT touch the heads with your fingers as they are very delicate .
