My daughter had not used her 1998 polo for six months and when I tried to reactivate the car its alarm went into melt down.
The only key fob would not work and so I disconnected the siren located behind the air cleaner by removing the plugin connector on the siren top.
This stopped the noise but the indicators were on and the car ignition immobilised.
I noticed that between alarm cycles the indicators stopped and it was possible to start the car and it would run perfectly (all be it with the indicators flashing and if I hadn’t un-pugged it, the siren sounding).
I tried all the known methods to re program the key fob but eventually came to the conclusion that due to the cars lack of value the alarm had to go.
The module is 998 VAG 155 located behind the glove box (removal by 5 star/ torques screws).
I metered and observed the outputs of the connections with no key in the ignition ,with key in position 2 (immobilised ) and alarm going and the engine running(between cycles with indicators flashing etc.)
I also noted that when the car was running (between alarm cycles) I was able to disconnect the alarm module without any effect on the electrical or fuel system s of the car but when I turned off at the ignition key I was not able to achieve ignition again until I reconnect the 13 pin connector and wait for the alarm cycle gap.
MY solution which is reversible if a working fob can be obtained was to;
1. Ignore wires of the 2 plug-ins at far left
2. Unplug the13 pin connector
3. From left to right the connections are coloured;
Blk x2.brn, red,blkx2,grn,wht/blk,brn,blk/gry,blk,grnx2,redx2,red,gry.
4. Forcefully pull out the third from left red wire and connector (it will re seat if required in the future)This connection has a 12 v supply to the unit and removal will cease its operation.
5. Isolate this 12v supply with insulation (shrink wrap/ tape etc.) and re plug all connections to the module.
6. Test that you now have all functions (excluding the alarm) including central locking but without remote (fob) access.
Re assemble the glove box.
IF you want re-instalment of the alarm/remote system this can be achieved by re-insertion of the 12v red wire to its slot.
