battery symbol?

the battery symbol has appered on the dash baord of my 00 ford focus any idea's why

Check the battery connections etc., but I think it is probably an alternator problem. Many fast-fit type places will test the alternator output free of charge ( although they will try to sell you a new battery/alternator - resist! ).
Dont drive it with the light on.
