H reg Rover 216 GSI automatic possible electrical fault?

Ive recently purchased a H reg Rover 216 GSI automatic. i was driving it home from work the other day and the car cut out with no warning, very smooth and the battery light came on, the car wouldnt start again for half an hour, the same thing happened the next day but it started after 10 mins, again the power just cut out smoothly and the battery light came on.
Any help would be grately appreciated?
