How replace noisy bearing - motorized head of Kenmore vacuum?

The motorized head of my Kenmore vacuum cleaner was noisy. Took it apart & diagnosed problem; ball bearing seized, plastic housing melted, cap on end of wooden dowel rod also damaged, felt spacer/washer gone. Bearing & short shaft came out of wood dowel with brushes OK. How do I get the plastic cap off end of dowel. This is end opposite belt drive. The belt & that end looks fine. Thanks!
