Mend Kenmore 116.7307600 Vacuum Canister Replacement

ON/OFF SWITCH REPLACEMENT?

I HAVE A KENMORE PROGRESSIVE CANNISTER VACUUM CLEANER WITH THE POWER MATE ATTACHMENT. THE ON/OFF SWITCH IN THE HANDLE IS BAD. HOW DO YOU DISASSEMBLE THE HANDLE? I REMOVED THE THREE SCREWS BUT THE HANDLE WILL NOT COME APART - APPARENTLY THERE IS A LOCKING MECHANISM WHEN THE PARTS ARE "SLID" TOGETHER.

mine has 4 screws, and i could then just pry it apart. The halves have a tail that slides into the hose. Thing is, I replaced the switch and IT STILL WON'T TURN OFF! Even with the hose not attached, plugging the thing in turns it on. Do you have the same problem (won't turn off)?
