diverter head-combi boiler?

i have been told that my diverter valve isnt working and have been advised by one plumber to get the the whole lot (diverter head etc) and another to get just the valve, can anyone tell me if its normal practise to maybe replace the whole thing or is replacin just the diverter valve enough??? please please help me i have no hot water :-( fanx
