Yellow Pages will direct you to an electrician who will be pleased to install a modern consumer unit for you - he will aslo test all your electrical systems and leave you with paperwork to show the safety of your overall installation - useful if you come to sell the property.
I believe you are permitted to do the work yourself but UK law requires you notify the local authority who will arrange a safety inspection at your cost.
