Mend Sears 116.23913300 Model Electrical Problem

How to fix Sears model 116.23913300 electrical problem?

I bought a new hose for this vacuum and when I attached it to the canister and plugged the unit into the wall outlet the power head comes on immediately. The buttons on the control handle do not work and the canister motor does not go on. I had this same problem with the original hose, so now I have two hoses that do the same thing.
