How can I fix my Technics Stereo System CD player?

We have a Technics CD Stereo System SC-CH404 and the CD player has suddenly stopped working. The rest of the system is okay. When a disc is inserted and the play button is pressed the system looks as though it is going to play the CD but after a few seconds it indicates 'no disc'. I have tried cleaning the CD and also several different CDs but they still won't play. Help please
