Mine did the same thing. I trouble shot the circuit and found a small thermal fuse was blown. I found one at radio shack and installed it. Works fine now. The fuse looks like a little crayon with a small wire on each end.

I just received a replacement heater, my first one stopped working and had to send it back... I had a warranty on it, but it cost $60 shipping. :( I've had this one for about 2 months and it just shuts off, I push the reset button and wait awhile, turn it on again, it works about 20 min. then stops again. Any body got any suggestions how to fix this. Trying to get a hold of them people is like pulling teeth.

Someone may come across this, but I did not see anything specific being asked about it.

I had the lights go out on one of mine. I found out that a standard "Night Light" bulb works just fine as a replacement. You cannot adjust the brightness levels, but they are a very cheap replacement that last just as long, or longer than the supplied bulbs. Available anyplace that sells bulbs for nightlights.

So, it looks like my element is damaged and that is why the thermistor tripped. Bypassing yields hot spots on the element, and the limit trips after 15 seconds. DO NOT BYPASS EITHER OF THESE COMPOENTS FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN TROUBLESHOOTING PURPOSES. YOU WILL BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN! I'm trying to figure out why replacement elements aren't compatible with 2007 model without complete overhaul.

My heat surge lights do not work, heat and fan is fine, bulbs have been replaced. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong with it - it just doesn't light up. Thanks.

Heat surge has worked excellent three years now but suddenly started making MAJOR noise! Still pumps out heat, just too loud and sounds too dangerous to leave on to me. I am definitely technically challenged so not even sure how/where to open the thing - any ideas and is it worth finding someone to help drag it to a repair place to look at? Seriously I love the thing and it has been a main heat source for me this year as I couldn't afford to keep filling oil tank so I'd love to have it fixed if possible. Anyone near De/Pa border can recommend a place?

As to the cold air problem, it's most likely broken a wire in the heater coil, which makes it non-functional. This is an easily replaceable part by any Heat Surge repair station. If you care to try it yourself, you'll need a new bi-metal heater, part #30000216, $24.95. A site called TotalVac.com has them for that price. If there are any seriously blackened or charred connections they should be replaced also. The flame not rolling could be a stuck shaft on the little motor that runs the flame rod. If you're careful you can reach up in through the bulb access panel and find the flame rod, I would take the bulbs out or at least unscrew them part way so they are not lit. They get quite hot and if you lay your arm against one it won't feel good. So, after you've unscrewed the bulb nearest the right hand end, reach up in behind the screen and find the flame shaft, work your way over to the right end of it and you should feel the motor connection. Try to turn the shaft while the unit is on and the lights should be running, if it feels like it's trying to run but just can't quite make it, then it could just be dirty. Disassembly to get to it to take it off for replacement or repair is quite lengthy so you might want to have that done by a professional repair shop. I think that motor is about the same cost, right around the $24 area.

Our Heat Surge has been "repaired" twice, "said" circuit board replaced and secon shop "said" burnt wire was replaced. We received an "extended" warrenty and paid, because it was a possible way to get the thing fixed. I have done the "tip it ove face down and go thru the procedure to "reset" everything. Bought their filters and installed. Now it's doing the same thing. I guess it's going back to the reapir shop and they'll probably put one of the "overhauled" inserts in it.

I have a 80 year old client who has one of these GREAT AMISH infrared heaters. She was given a letter to get a 2 year warranty. She did not get one and the heater broke on the 13 month. Truly, these things are made to fall apart after the warranty. This is very sad as this company plays on people.

Rob, my Grandmother's wouldn't work after we moved it's location. Just fine, then Dead-the reset didn't do anything. Just found on another site that the the tip sensor is on a pendulum. You rock the unit forward and backwards and/or side to side and that may free it up. It worked!!!

I have a adl 2000m-x and mine when plugged in beeps also and control pad works but heater or blower doesnt work. I took it out of the mantle ( take 4 screws out of the inside located on the sides through the brackets (tight fit)and pull out the front after straightening the brackets). I tore apart (take top off)and found the main circuit board had a plug burnt out of it so I need to replace circuit board which I found on line for 49.95. they said it is a retrofit for my model, guess i will find out.I bought 2 of these and the other one is still working fine after 5 years.

Thanks so much for all the helpful posts. My Amish Heat Surge heater (2008 model w/o reset button) began blowing ONLY cold air several months after I bought it ($400+). Blower, flames still worked. I let it sit in my garage for a couple of years until a couple of months ago when I started 'googling' what could possibly be wrong. Thankfully I found this forum and read all the previous posts.

I took the heater out thru the front of the frame (unplugged), and after removing a few screws, lifted off the top of the heater. I unhooked each end of the thermal cutoff fuse (small silver cylinder w/ pointy end on the right) which was pointing to the more rectangular fuse. None of the Radio Shacks I went into or called in my area had them or sold them. I ordered them online from Goodman's.net in Hiahleah Florida. I ordered ten (figured this would happen again), for $10.00 plus s/h for total of $13.48. The invoice lists the item # as: TH-TF110C, made by Thermodisc. You can google "G4A01110C thermal cut off fuse" as they are made by different companies. I believe the manufacturer of the original TCO fuse in my heater was MicroTemp (could only read w/ magnifying glass). This particular TCO fuse is activated and I'm guessing blows, every time the heating element reaches 110 degrees celcius as a safety backup, which then renders the whole unit useless as far as heating.

I received my fuses in about a week. I did not solder or use alligator clips, I simply cut off the excess wiring at both ends and bent the wires so that they fit down into the rivet holes as someone else had suggested. I plugged the heater in, pushed the ON button, then the heater button on LOW. It blew cold air for a few seconds, then I heard a small clicking sound and warm air began to flow... Voila!

Again many thanks to all of you pioneers who have gone before me and conquered Heat Surge!

ps: I'm a girl. Well, 53 yo, so if I can do it anyone can.

I have a heat surge unit that would not heat but the blower did run. I bypassed the fuse as other did in the past and it works fine now. One suggestion for the do it your selfer! This will eliminate your safety designed into the unit. Make sure the unit is connected to an outlet that has either a ground fault interrupter or a minimum of a circuit breaker. Although this is not the best option it will retain a little protection should the circuit overheat! Dont even try to get help from the heat surge folks, its a waste of time. The Chinese technology is not brilloiant and replacement parts are readily availalbe in your local electrical warehouse or radio shack.

I took a piece of wire and went from one side of the little fuse like device (which is on top of the heater element) to the othe side and now it works. Is it safe that way or should I get a replacement fuse like device?

My in-laws have two of them. They asked me to repair one that wasn't putting out any heat. I opened it, and found that the bearings on the cheesy blower motor were dirty, and the fan would barely turn (if at all). I took the motor apart (only two screws), and cleaned the axle and bearing races with alcohol. I also took out the fan and cleaned its bearing on the far end. Put it back together, and it worked fine.
However, it only blew cold air. I jumpered the thermal fuse, and it put out hot air again.
The thermal fuse was rated at 110C. I went down to the local Radio Shack and picked up a new one for $1.99+tax. The closest one they had was 129C. Close enough. I soldered it into the little tab holes for the old fuse, and darn if I didn't overheat and blow it while soldering it (wasn't the first time I have done that). I ohmed it out, and it was toast. Jumpering it again made it work, so I am sure it is the fuse that is the problem.
Ahywho . . . maybe later I'll bebop down the the RS and hang my head in shame as I pick up a new thermal fuse. Maybe this time I will crimp it into place like the original.
BTW, these things are nothing more than your typical space heater with pretty lights inside of a cheap cabinet. Not at all worth the prices mentioned in this thread. But as long as my in-laws are happy . . .

Thanks to mic101 my heat surge is working again and it only cost me $1.99! I had a problem with my heat surge no longer producing heat so I got a thermal fuse ($1.99 at Radio Shack) and followed mic101's advice. Also thanks to joek, as I took his advice (bend the leads on the fuse just right it will wedge down inside the rivet holes) and I did not even have to solder. Gotta love the internet.

On top of that my wife is very happy that I fixed it without having to spend another $139. I have a lot of brownie points to spend now! ;-)

Outta the doghouse and into the cathouse!

Woohoo! Thanks again guys!

When you open the unit up, there is a small C-Frame motor used for the blower motor. Part number should be on the motor including amp draw. You can go to www.graingers.com or any electronic control store to find the motor. If it is the board thats bad, take unit down range, load up 12 gauge and enjoy letting some fustration loose, because these heaters really dont do what they should.

you cant effectivley repair the heat surge. the thing is a nice looking piece of junk.. what all of us have expierenced is called Built in obsolessence. thats when a company makes a product that it knows will stop working after a period of time and there is no fix. i know three other people who bought this thing so that makes four people who have a piece of junk. nothing else to do but toss it and buy a heater that does not look as good but will work for them THIS ONE WILL NOT

Just took the advice of Mic101. Replaced the thermal fuse and its working like a champ again, just in time for Christmas. Did not use clips. If you bend the leads on the fuse just right it will wedge down inside the rivet holes. Make sure that if you solder that you use a heat sink as intense heat will damage the fuse. Happy heating. thanks Mic101

We had the same problem with our 1st Heat Surge only blowing cold air (lights and "flames" still fine) JUST after it went out of warrantee. I read the fabulous fixes listed here and commend you brave people. We bought our 2nd Heat Surge (just 2 weeks ago...the newer model with thermostat+) from HSN (Home Shopping Network) and once again, purchased an extended warrantee from THEM, not the people of the large newspaper ad. We've always found HSN to be quickly responsive and for those of you who are thinking of getting one of these, we DO find them much more economical in heating our huge great room rather than either electric or gas heating options we have in our home. SO: my advice to those contemplating purchasing a Heat Surge, we've been delighted. Not so happy about the heat unit blowing and no reset button due to it being and older model. BUT the secret would be to purchase it from HSN (shipping was free and the cost was less, with more model choices, including a corner unit as well). If there are problems (and we hope there won't be) we are confident HSN will respond quickly. We've always done well with them. www.hsn.com and/or 1.800.284.3100 Good luck! Oh....and I don't quite dare try the fuse fixes, however logical they sound...but that's just me.

Go to an electronics parts warehouse. The thermal fuses are only around $1.60 a piece. Check the fuse by using a multimeter for continuity between the two ends. I used a magnified glass to see the numbers of celcius temp on the fuse I believe it is 109C. I am now having trouble with blower not coming on. Once I figure that out I will comment again... I am an HVAC expert.

Hello again ya'll. I spent alot of time trying to figure out why I wasn't getting any heat from my new/used heat surge that had worked find for over one year. Please note, I'm not an electrician but just a tenacious retiree. So far, this is what I've learned. [BTW, my unit is one of the older ones (prior Aug 2008) that doesn't have a reset button (don't know if the newer ones are wired the same).]

On top of the heater there are two small electronic devices that are riveted across the top of the heater. The first one is a Thermal fuse. It's about a half-inch long, with one end that points toward the next small electronic device that is more rectangular, the Thermal cut-away which as I understand it allows the unit to heat-up; ie. metal flap 'opens' with heat and closes when it cools back down.

In my case the blower worked and the flame/lights worked but I didn't have any heat; the fuse blew. I bought two thermal fuses for $3 at Radio Shack. And I bought a package of small insulated alligator clips to reconnect them. Seems to work fine now.

If you think you need a Thermal cut-away, I think you'll need to find an electric supply store. Hopefully they carry them because Radio Shack does not.

If your fan doesn't work, or the lights don't work, this is a different electrical connection all together. Didn't have this problem so I can't help on that.

Hope this helps some.

HEY U 2!! Peter December2009 and/or K.Mercer NV November2009. Alot of people need your help!!

You two are the only brains on the internet that know anything at all about repairing one of these things!! Could you possibly provide more info on the fixes you wrote about? Maybe a picture or two?? I found the fuse but it doesn't look blown to me. I have no idea about the heater coil, diode resistor, etc. And I can't figure out how to check connections. Maybe I just need to find out where I could take it for repair...any suggestions there? thanks!!

Paula
December 2009
i repaired it by bypassing the resistor that is on top of the heater coil, but with only a 7.5 amp fuse, it wont work on high setting and just blows the fuse. to fix this properly you need to replace the diode resistor that goes bad. they all do it and its a cheap fix especially if your unit is out of warrenty.

to whom it may concern...ive had several amish heaters and love them! economically adventagious for us here, but i have had the same issues. the unit runs fine but only blows cold air. i discovered a fuse on top of the heater coil that blows internally. your local radio shack(or equivallent) can supply you with this or direct you in the right direction. -you'll need a screw driver, a soldering gun, solder, and your new part. fixed in 15 mins.
