Thanks for your responses, it gave me the inspiration to have a go. I pulled shrply on the glove box to remove it (no screws or fixings to remove) and out it popped, then unclipped the carpet to reveal the resistor pack screwed to the bulkhead. A quick wiggle of the wires to the resistor did the trick, it must have been a poor connection as the fan is now working again. I found an enthsiasts site which has great photos and instructions on how to replace the resistor pack and connectors.
