what is a egr valve on ldv convoy (transit engine)?

what is a egr valve on ldv convoy 2002. the engine management light flashes constantly then you turn the ignition off and start it again it runs for a little while then cuts out again but the engine is still running there is no throttle. is this something too do with the egr valve?
