how can I fix my lazyboy recliner?

I have an older model (18 years) lazyboy recliner. After raising the foot rest into position, the chair will not stabilize, keeps rocking. The contraption that controls this regulated by a length of wire that runs from a fixed bracket and attatches with a set screw to rod that controls it. Frank
