Mend Renault Traffic Light Lights

My Renault Traffic vans handbrake and stop light keeps coming on?

The lights tend to come on when I drive downhill. I have been told that the brake fluid may be low. How do I fill it back up and what dot fluid do I need to use. I am a plumbing and heating engineer and have done some mechanics, but lamens terms would be appreciated.
