what would cause a gas gauge to register wrong?

I had a new fuel pump installed and now when I start my truck the gas hand jumps pass the full mark to back pass the empty mark and stays at the quarter mark ,but its full of gas. My 99 Chevy Tahoe, also has had it's fuel sensor regulator changed. The gas hand was working fine before the fuel pump change.Was it installed wrong?
