Why does my steam generator iron ?

I have recently purchaed a morphy richards steam generator iron 42297. It works long enough for me to iron 2 items and then the standby button starts bleeping and turns and flashes red - the steam stops and iron goes cold - can somone help me please - I am the point where I may return to the retailer
