technics sl-p277a cd players has stopped playing?

My (12 year-old?) Technics cd player sl-p277a - part of a (black) stack system, has just stopped playing cd s. It whirr-whirrs once or twice and presumably thinks to itself 'silly sod hasn't put a cd in' and stops. Funnily enough, my Panasonic (bedroom radio and cd / tape player) has exactly the same problem.
If not easily fixed how can I replace said technics?
