What does a starter on a riding lawn mower look like?

first of all: if you have to ask that question you have no business trying to work on any engine, but since you asked. it is slightly larger than a beer can, it is usually on the engines right side and is usually black, or silver and has a red wire going to it.

But i hope your wife is going to do the work!

the starter will be round about 5 inches tall it bols to the block by the flywheel

Bolted onto the side of the engine, its a steel cylindrical looking thing about 7" long, 2 1/2" diameter with a thick wire fixed to its bottom!
