How can I fix my Southwestern Bell Freedom Phone Model# FM891BCS?

My phone does not disconnect when I hang up but it just continues on as if I did not hang up. The phone is a Southwestern Bell Freedom Phone Model # FM891BCS. It is a corded phone. The only way I can disconnect it is by pulling out the telephone wire connection.
