Mend Candy CD623 Timer Replace Remove

replacement of the timer on a Candy CD623 dishwasher?

Hi, I am trying to replace the timer on a Candy CD623 dishwasher but cannot work out how to remove the timer knob/dial. The new timer spindle has a groove which looks like something a circlip or something similar should fit into but I cannot gain access to it. Is there a simple way to remove it without damaging the dial?
