Flashing engine light and sluggish sounding like a diesel?

The engine light on my yaris has just started flashing and is now on continuously, the engine is really sluggish and sounds like a diesel engine does anyone know what the problem could be

needs a service, take it to a garage and ask if they can use a diagnostics machine, that will give info on any faults.
