how can I start my mower?

my 87 snapper lt12 tractor will begin to turn over then stop also neg battery cable will become extremly hot new battery

Check the connection of the black battery lead where it joins to the bodywork - any resistance here will cause the cable to heat. This cable also needs to be thick in order to handle the starter current - I've known people to replace it with one that is too thin.
