Why is my washing machine not cleaning properly?

Remove the agitator which is very simple to do, clean that whole area you will find it wll be full of grease body fat etc.
After cleaning under agitator and filter, re-assemble and fill with hot water and detergent (no phosphate preferably) no clothes.
1. Run cycle and check after cycle finished.
2. Try not to always use fabric softener as this causes problem most times (vinegar will soften clothes in final wash) without clogging up machine.

Check there is no crappy residue that you can wipe away from the door seal to drum area.

You could:
Increase the wash temperature
Change your detergent (maybe to a bio one)
Wash for a longer cycle
Use a water softening tablet such as Calgon
Use a stain removing spray first.
A woman's work is never done!!
