Jonboy - yes you will have to replace the HT coil if the lead is duff, however, you can just replace the plug connector on the end, or even somply genly crush the connector with a pair of pliers to make it a tighter fit.
Pleasent - as you are undoubtably aware, the Vantage engine was a re-launch of the earlier BVS engine. The differences included a change of cowling, adoption of the standard 'modular' recoil starter, revised carburettor, and a PHASED change to solid state ignition. The engine proper did not change at all (same service short-block part number). Just to be sure, I've just popped the flywheel off a brand new Vantage. Guess what? Machined bosses under the flywheel for mounting a points-type stator plate. There follows a direct quote from Tecumseh form number 694212A, (included with all new short engines) dated 8/94 (1 year AFTER the engine in question) ;-

Current production engines are primarily built with solid state ignition, however some engines are still built with standard points ignition and will require the removal of ignition mounting posts in order for this replacement to be used in these applications. There will be an instruction sheet in the box explaining this procedure.
I have approx 830 Tecumseh engines in stock dating from 1970 to 2008. There is no fixed date for change over to soild state, and 1993 is right in the middle of the change over period.
